Do I need to download any software to use gnuTrade?gnuTrade is a completely online trading system so no downloads are required. However, you need to make sure your computer meets the minimum system requirements for running the application.
What kind of technology do you use?We use a mixture of different, proven technologies to help maximise your trading experience.
Our main client application is based on Flash because it is compatible with PCs, Macs, phones and games consoles. For our back end architecture, we are proud to be using scalable open source technologies, including Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP and Mambo (Joomla). These offer a reliable and robust solution without reliance on big software companies.
We actively support the open source software movement and make regular donations to the communities we participate in. Our own gnuTrade MXP is available to developers around the world who would like to help GnuTrade remain "leading edge" in online trading. Unlike many other trading applications, our software doesn't require any downloads or constant updates and patches.
Do I have to pay a fee to use gnuTrade?gnuTrade is completely free to use. Unlike many financial trading companies, we don't charge for our software and we don't charge commissions or trading taxes.
Since gnuTrade is an offshore, online company, we have a lower cost base than many other trading companies and can pass on these savings to our members. We only 'charge' for our service through the small difference between our buy and sell prices and the odds we offer on our basic bets. These compare very favourably with those offered by other companies.
Also, we don't require huge minimum deposits and complicated procedures to open an account.
I live in the United States. Can I use gnuTrade? We are currently evaluating the legal status of our real money service as it applies to customers located in the United States. Until this review is complete, we are temporarily unable to accept real money deposits from customers located in the United States. If you live in the US you may, however, trade freely using your play money account and access all other features on the gnuTrade site.
Trading with real money on gnuTrade is likely to be available in the near future for people located in the US. If you would like to share your views on the subject or want us to let you know when this facility becomes available, please email us at

Recent high profile US legislation restricts certain forms of internet bets and wagers. This legislation also appears to provide long awaited clarity on the US position on financial wagering. The legislation clearly states that the definition of ‘bets and wagers’ does not include ‘over the counter derivative instruments’. The term ‘over the counter derivative instrument’ most closely describes our form of non-listed trading on derivatives of underlying markets.
We hope that future regulations move in the same direction to help explain the US position further and differentiate between the educational training and trading service offered by gnuTrade, and traditional forms of internet gaming.
Additional note: The above policy regarding real money deposits also applies to residents of Turkey. How do I change my user name?To change your username, send an email request to

, stating your full name, email address and the new username you want to use. We will make the necessary change and send you an email to confirm that your new username is active.
How do I change the time zone display on my statement? All gnuTrade prices and trades are tracked in GMT. We are currently working to provide the ability to view statements in the time zone of your choice, and expect this functionality to be available very soon. As soon as this feature is ready, you will be able to change the time zone used to display trades and transactions from the statement itself or by clicking here.
Why can't I open the trader screen? If you receive a session error message when you try to open the trading application, simply re-login to the gnuTrade website and try opening the trader screen again. Depending on the speed of you internet connection, the application may then take between 30 seconds to a few minutes to load.
If you find that the trading screen still doesn't open, you may have a strict pop-up blocker that is preventing the window from opening. Try holding down the 'ctrl' or 'alt' key while clicking on the 'trade now' button, or disable your pop-up blocker or change its settings. (Some pop up blockers with anti virus or spyware removal software are overly strict and prevent windows you select from opening.)

What happens if my computer crashes while gnuTrade is running?Your open trades and the balance of money in your accounts will not be affected if your computer crashes.
Why can't I use the Live Chat Room and Helpdesk features on the Trader Screen? If you are experiencing difficulty in using the Live Chat Rooms and Helpdesk, it is probably because we have an extremely high volume of traffic on the site. This is a temporary situation due to an overload on our servers and we suggest you try visiting the chat area at a later time. If you have a help desk query, please send an email to

I keep getting an error message when I try to make a trade. How do I resolve this? When you have been logged in to gnuTrade for a long time, with little activity, the system automatically logs you out for security reasons. If you then try to open, close or adjust a trade, an error message appears. To resolve this, log off gnuTrade, clear your browser’s cache. and then log back in before re-attempting the trade.
Why did my trade get closed even though I set it to roll?Your trade was probably closed because you did not have enough money in your Cash Balance to cover the overnight rolling fee. Even if you have enough money in your overall trading account, you must make sure there is a sufficient amount in the Cash Balance to cover the fee and keep your trade open. You can do this by adjusting the Stop loss levels on your open trades, so money moves from your Margin Balance into your Cash Balance. If you don’t want to adjust your Stop levels, you can increase the amount in the Cash Balance by making another real money deposit into your account. This is the minimum amount you need in your Cash Balance to roll the trade on that particular night. Why do I keep hearing a popping sound when I’m using the Trader screen? The popping sound occurs when other users log in to the Trader screen or move in and out of chat rooms. You can switch this off if you prefer, by selecting ‘mute’ in the Features window on your Trader screen.
