The S&P 500 (US Standard & Poors 500) is a list of the top 500 US corporations, in terms of market capitalisation, which trade on US stock exchanges such as the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq.Its performance is considered to be indicative of the performance of the stock market as a whole, as well as trends in the US economy. The price of the S&P 500 index reflects the performance of the companies in the list.
